Estimate only. Real sheet counts depend on bleed, gutters, trim allowance and how pages pack onto your chosen sheet size. The calculation compares 1-up against 4-up at 2 sides per sheet and rounds up to whole sheets per copy.

How the calculation works

Imposition saves paper by fitting multiple document pages onto each sheet. The math is straightforward:

  • Pages per sheet = N-up × sides (2 if double-sided, 1 if single-sided).
  • Sheets per copy = ⌈ pages ÷ pages-per-sheet ⌉ (rounded up to a whole sheet).
  • Total sheets = sheets per copy × number of copies.
  • Savings = (1-up sheets − N-up sheets) × cost per sheet.

For example, a 48-page booklet printed 4-up double-sided fits 8 pages per sheet, so each copy needs ⌈48 ÷ 8⌉ = 6 sheets instead of 24 sheets at 1-up — a 75% paper reduction before trim allowance.

When imposition saves the most

The bigger the run and the higher the N-up, the larger the saving. High-volume jobs (flyers, cards, tickets, booklets) at 4-up, 8-up or 16-up cut sheet counts dramatically, which reduces paper cost, click charges and press time. Low-volume one-offs save less in absolute terms but still reduce handling.
